On Monday, data centers in the East Coast, which also provide cloud-computing services swung into emergency action and took preparations to keep critical communications services running. Data centers in the affected states fueled up emergency back-up generators for power outages. New York being inundated by Sandy, and holding critical data centers and cloud computing facilities for the world, is a particularly vulnerable target, though until now things seem to be on track and the digital world still running.

Cloud computing service providers like Verizon put up special web pages on regular Hurricane Sandy updates (Verizon is here http://www.verizonbusiness.com/about/news/pr-26011-en-Hurricane+Sandy+Updates+.xml) On the ‘service status page’ of Amazon, (http://status.aws.amazon.com/) put up specially for monitoring Hurricane Sandy, until now, all services show running normally.

Amazon stated on its status page, “We are monitoring Hurricane Sandy and making all possible preparations (e.g. generator fuel, food/water, flashlights, radios, extra staff) in our US East Region. Our infrastructure teams are following our storm response plan that we have developed and utilized during major storms over a multi-year period.” For Amazon Web Services, its US-East-1 facility in Northern Virginia, is in a spot for concern and emergency staff on high alert.

Rackspace, which is one of the biggest players in cloud computing services put up a page on the Rackspace blog and newsroom “Preparing Our Data Centers For Hurricane Sandy.” (http://www.rackspace.com/blog/preparing-our-data-centers-for-hurricane-sandy/) Rackspace said on its page that Hurricane Sandy would be causing “widespread power outages and floods, including in areas where Rackspace operates data centers. The teams at our Virginia facilities, and also at our headquarters in San Antonio, have been working round the clock to ensure that our customers’ data remains safe and that they continue to receive the Fanatical Support that they’ve come to expect, even during what many forecasters predict will be a “perfect storm.””
